On the first day of the New Year, I flew to Hong Kong, one of my dream cities. I had imagined Hong Kong as a city surrounded by the blue ocean, covered by large greenery and with lots of natural and artificial beautiful scenes. I expected it to combine the cultures of both the East and the West since it is well-known as a global fashion centre. When my plane landed over the bridges connecting the islands in the evening, I saw that the city was dotted with millions of lights, just like stars shining in the sky. This first impression was not bad. But next morning it became a disaster, as I walked out of my hotel located in North Point. I was frightened by the scene of the city before me. I could only think of one word in my brain: mess. I was prepared for Hong Kong to be very crowded since every big city is. I had thought that I would be able to stand it because I am from Shanghai. But I was wrong. I was totally shocked by the mess and breathlessness of this city.

Every street was jammed with shops and every shop was jammed with goods, let alone (更不用說(shuō)) the crowds of stalls on the roadsides. The whole city looked like a grocery. Streets were narrow and I didn't find a two-way road all day. People struggled to throw themselves into the buses and cars could hardly move in the downtown. This city is absolutely over-constructed. People should have realized space was limited when seeking more living facilities. The overloaded land endangers the prosperity (繁榮) of the city. Nobody will prefer living or sightseeing in such a crowded city. I think there is an important lesson for Shanghai to learn from Hong Kong, for Shanghai is undergoing speedy development and massive urban construction. Careful planning is essential not only because over-heated urban construction brings economic risks but also because it could lead to the same embarrassing situation as now in Hong Kong.

Fortunately, Shanghai is not an island city like Hong Kong, so we have opportunities to do better in 20 years' time -- roughly the same period that Shanghai is now believed to fall behind Hong Kong in its level of urban development. Think ahead.

  24. On the second day in Hong Kong, the writer felt ________.

  A. satisfied B. disappointed C. excited D. happy

  25. We can get the information from the passage that ________.

  A. the writer thinks it comfortable to live in Hong Kong.

  B. Hong Kong develops much more slowly than Shanghai.

  C. in spite of the prosperity of Hong Kong, the writer dislikes living there.

  D. Hong Kong is well constructed though it is crowded.

  26. From the passage, we can infer that _______.

  A. we shouldn’t travel or shop in Hong Kong.

  B. everyone prefers living in a big city like Hong Kong.

  C. careful planning isn’t needed for big cities in order to develop rapidly.

  D. if carefully planned, Shanghai can do better than Hong Kong in the future.

  27. The author intends to tell us that ________.

  A. we should learn a lesson from Hong Kong.

  B. he made an awful travel to Hong Kong.

  C. Hong Kong is over-constructed.

  D. there are some differences between Shanghai and Hong Kong

A large number of the public believe young people aged between 18 and 30 have the toughest time, with work pressure and financial worries the leading cause of stress, according to a survey.

The study of 2,003 adults of all ages found that work stress and financial worries are significant sources of pressure for 59.8 percent and 55.1 percent of adults separately.

Other major sources of stress include feeling anxious and lost (32.6 percent), a lack of promotion opportunities (32.3 percent), and emotional instability (不穩(wěn)定) (28 percent).

Wang Yong, a post-90s salesman, said he is now experiencing extreme stress over money. "I have got nothing two years after graduating and this uncomfortable situation might last for another two or three years."

The good news is that, on average, 40.3 percent of respondents (受訪者) reported their stress levels are tending downward.

Nearly 55.1 percent reported they lessen pressure with more effective mental hints (暗示) or motivational keywords, according to the report.

Some people take other steps to reduce stress. Talking with friends, allowing time to heal, and talking to parent and professional counseling (咨詢) were reported by about half of respondents as ways to reduce stress.

To fight against financial stress, He Shanjun, an associate professor at China University of Political Science and Law, noted that adults who are feeling stressed and are out of balance in their life should persevere (堅(jiān)持不懈) with their careers and go through the tough times.

"It might be the best time for the young, especially between 18 and 30, to experience hardship and build up willpower."

  28. According to the study, ________ ranks first in the major sources of pressure among young people.

  C. financial worries D. work stress

  29. Which of the following is NOT the way used by respondents to reduce pressure?

  A. Effective mental hints B. Talking with friends

  C. Working harder D. Professional advice

  30. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

  A. It makes sense that young people should overcome the tough time.

  B. The stress levels on the young are still going up.

  C. Old people don’t have any pressure like the young.

  D. Pressure can only hold the young back in their life.

  31. The underlined word “lessen” in Paragraph 6 probably means __________ .

  A. increase B. reduce C. limit D. forbid

  D

We chat with our colleagues all the time: when we have lunch, gossip in the tearoom, or leave work together.

Sharing your personal life brings you closer to your co-workers and builds trust within your team. But revealing too much about yourself to colleagues or managers can cause difficulties and even endanger your work.

It’s vital to strike the right balance between getting along with colleagues and keeping your privacy safe. “As a matter of fact, it takes skills to communicate in the office. You can neither chat too much, nor be too silent and shut yourself off from others,” said Yang Yudan, vice HR director (人事經(jīng)理) at P&G. According to her, there are several safe topics to talk about with colleagues during the break, such as weather or movies. Women like to talk about makeup and clothing, while men are fond of sports and online games.

But discussing your private life, such as relationship, habits or health conditions, is potentially risky. Cui Xia, 21, who has been working for an IT company for only 2 months, learned this hard way when she found out that everyone knew she had broken up with her boyfriend. “I spoke about it with two colleagues in the tearoom and told my friend via phone, and then the news spread.” And her boss finally heard about it and asked her not to let it affect her work performance.

Sometimes revealing private matters in a thoughtless manner can result in disastrous consequences. Liang Kun, 26, had to resign from his job at a trading company last week after discussing his income with colleagues during a lunch break. “I didn’t realize it was such a serious issue until a senior member of staff went to find the boss, asking why I got a higher salary than her,” said Liang. “Then our HR told me it’s forbidden to talk about payments in the office.” HR expert Yang Yudan also reminds us that paychecks are your own business. It’s unwise to share this information with others, no matter how close you are.

To sum up, Yang Yudan advises office workers to be more aware of their images when talking to colleagues. “When you share your personal life, it will be recorded on your invisible resume (無(wú)形的簡(jiǎn)歷) and may slow down your career progression.”

  32. Which of the following topics is NOT suitable when chatting in the office?

  A. Makeup B. Football matches

  C. Annual earnings D. TV shows such as Running Man

  33. We may know from the passage that ________.

  A. women often talk more about their personal affairs than men.

  B. to avoid getting into trouble, you’d better keep silent at work.

  C. it’s wise to talk about how much you earn each month with your colleagues.

  D. revealing too much about your privacy may have a negative effect on your career.

  34. What’s the purpose of the passage?

  A. To mention a phenomenon. B. To provide some suggestions.

  C. To give professional guides. D. To offer necessary warnings.

  35. The best title for this passage is ________.

  A. At work, No chatting! B. Desire for privacy.

  C. At work, Keep it to yourself! D. Learn to respect others’ privacy.

  二、作文:參考范文

As is known to all, tourism has been developing very rapidly in recent years. There is no doubt that it can relieve our stress from work and make us relaxed. In addition, it can broaden our horizon, experience different cultures and make friends from different places. What’s more, tourism can contribute to the local economy and create jobs for the local people.

However, there also exist some disadvantages about it. For example, famous places of interest will attract more tourists to visit, which may destroy the natural environment and disturb the normal life of the local people.

As far as I’m concerned, every coin has its two sides. If tourism is well managed, we will benefit a lot from it after all.

M: Do you really have to go down to the lake to fetch all your water?

  (Text 6)

W: I think my wallet was stolen, sir.

M: Do you have any reason to believe that your wallet was stolen?

W: Yes, I left it on the table half an hour ago, but when I came back from the restroom, it was gone.

M: Are you sure you left your wallet on the table?

M: Sleep is important too. I heard people who sleep an average of eight hours a day have less health problems.

  (Text 9)

W: Dad, I’m bored. Can I go to a movie today?

  M: A movie today? Well, I don’t know.

W: Jeff always takes me to a movie.

M: Well, I know your uncle Jeff always takes you, but what movie would you like to see today, Aubrey?

  W: Avatar.

M: Avatar. Let me look at the newspaper. OK. Ah, here it is. Avatar. That starts in the afternoon at 2:45. Well, should we take mom with us?

  W: Yeah.

M: OK, we have to wait for mom because she’s at a meeting right now.

  W: OK.

M: Alright. And what should we do after we go to the movie?

W: Umm. … go on a little walk.

M: Go on a walk. Where would you like to go on a walk to? Would you like to go down to the beach or through the park?

W: To the beach. And then maybe we can go out to eat tonight. Does that sound OK?

  M: Yeah.

  W: Alright.

You ask me about my hometown, so now I’d like to tell you something about it. I live in Brighton, which is not a very big town. It has a population of around 300,000. It is on the coast about 50 miles from London. Of course it isn’t as interesting as London or Paris. But the air is a lot cleaner and better. There is little population there. There are a few factories in Brighton, but not many. It isn’t very easy to find a job there. My father used to work in a steel plant which shut down a year ago and my father lost his job. But there are a lot of hotels and language schools in town. In summer the town is full of travelers. My father decides to open a small shop to sell gifts. But he is short of money. He hopes that he can borrow some money from the bank.

The dog meat-eating festival will be held on June 21 in Yulin, Guangxi, when more than 10,000 dogs will be killed and served at table and enjoyed by dog meat eaters.

The dog meat-eating festival in Yulin is only a local tradition, to celebrate summer’s coming. The fight over the festival shows different ideas between traditional habit and the modern idea of animal protection. While some persons want to continue local traditions, animal lovers want to stop festivals like Yulin’s because they believe dogs, as man’s best friends, should not be killed for food.

Perhaps they should learn from the example set by South Korea, a country that has a much longer eating tradition of eating dog meat. Back in 1988, when Seoul would host the Olympic Games, animal lovers from some countries asked South Korea to stop eating dog meat. To keep a balance between South Koreans’ love for dog meat and some foreign countries’ and animal lovers’ demand, the South Korean government made restaurants sell dog meat in far away areas.

In China, there are no rules on saving dogs, so giving up the dog meat-eating festival will not be a good way to solve the problem. It requires time to encourage Yulin residents to change their eating habit. But animal lovers should respect other people’s choice of food in the great country of more than 50 ethnic groups.

But it is also important for people who eat dog meat to understand animal lovers’ demand. The local government in Yulin could use the South Korean example to at least control the number of dogs killed before summer comes and cut down the bad social influence of the festival.

  21. Why do people hold the dog meat-eating festival in Yulin?

  A. To celebrate spring’s coming.

  B. To celebrate autumn’s coming.

  C. To celebrate summer’s coming.

  D. To celebrate winter’s coming.

  22. What do animal lovers think of dogs?

  A. They are clever and cute.

  B. They are man’s best friends.

  C. They aren’t delicious.

  D. They are expensive.

  23. How did South Korea’s government answer animal lovers’ demand?

  A. They stopped people from eating dog meat.

  B. They did nothing to deal with the problem.

  C. They stopped people from killing any dogs.

  D. They had dog meat sold in far away areas.

  24. In the last paragraph, the writer may agree that .

  A. the government hasn’t done enough to deal with the problem

  B. the government has done enough to deal with the problem

  C. there is nothing wrong with the dog meat-eating festival

  D. the government should stop the dog meat-eating festival

She was the oldest runner in this marathon as well as the fastest in the 90-to-94 year-old group.

However this year she decided to run alone because she had a hard time keeping up, given that most of them are about 60-70 years younger.

Harriet says she runs to keep healthy and raise money for a hospital, which is close to her heart, thanks to her family’s cancer history. Over the years, she has raised over $90,000 for the hospital. And she is not done yet! Harriet says she plans to train harder and come back even stronger, in 2015!

A major development to self-driving cars may change the way we will drive in the future. Google, the leading company in self-driving technology, has changed its development plan. It had driverless cars built by car factories, but now will start building its own car.

Google has started to build some kinds of experimental electric self-driving cars that look like a Smart car. There is no steering wheel(方向盤), gas pedal or brake. The only thing a human passenger controls is a red “e-stop” button for fear stops and a start button. The car’s only “friendly” face is designed to make it help people accept self-driving technology.

Google workers took part in a long experiment, in which they used self-driving cars for their usual travel to work. No accident happened, but Google’s leaders realized that depending on a human passenger to drive in an emergency wouldn’t work because they may be reading, working, or sleeping. Now the self-driving car drives by itself if the driver takes his hands off the wheel for over ten seconds.

Google’s self-driving cars are now limited to a speed of 25 miles per hour for safety reasons. The cars aren’t allowed to drive on highways. However, a Google engineer said that once the cars are solved to run safely, we can drive at the speed of 50, even 80 miles an hour.

Google recently announced that its cars had covered 700,000 miles of public roads, and they were now running in busy city streets. People who love self-driving cars say this will improve transport by making roads safer, cutting down accident, and making less pollution.

  29. What is Google’s plan about driverless cars?

  A. It will have driverless cars built by car factories.

  B. It will give up its plan to make driverless cars.

  C. It will help other companies to make cars.

  D. It will start building its own driverless cars.

  C. it is dangerous for a driver to drive a self-driving car

  D. Google’s leaders didn’t pay enough attention to safety

  32. We can guess from the last paragraph that .

  A. self-driving cars are too expensive

  B. there will be more self-driving cars

  C. there will be fewer self-driving cars

  D. the government will stop Google’s plan

  Ma Liang’s Problem

From the picture we can see Ma Liang is surrounded by a pack of forest animals such as tigers, rabbits, lions and so on. They urge him to paint many more trees with his magic brush. Ma Liang gives no direct reply but says “How can I paint more to catch up with the speed at which trees are cut down?”

How does this situation come about? People don’t plant some trees in return after cutting down ones for their own benefit, which consequently endangers forest creatures and has made some animals homeless and some species even die out.

I think the earth is home to us human beings and animals are our friends. Only by living in harmony with nature and animals can we live better and longer, for to protect nature and the earth is to protect ourselves.

He met her at a party. She was outstanding while he was so normal. After the party, he invited her for coffee. She was surprised but being polite, she agreed.

As they sat in a nice coffee shop, he was too nervous to say anything and she felt uncomfortable. Suddenly, he asked the waiter, “Could you please give me some salt? I’d like to put it in my coffee. ” Everyone stared at him. He turned red, but when the salt came, he put it in his coffee and drank. Curious, she asked, “Why salt with coffee? ” He explained, “ When I was a little boy, I lived near the sea. I liked playing on the sea. I could feel the taste of sea, just like this salty coffee. ”

That was a really nice talk, also a good beginning of their story. They continued to date. She found that actually he was a man who met all her demands. Then the story was just like every beautiful love story: they got married and lived a happy life.

After 40 years, he passed away and left her a letter which said: My dearest, please forgive my life-long lie. Remember the first time we dated? I was so nervous that I asked for salt instead of sugar. It was hard for me to ask for a change, so I just went ahead. I never thought that could be the start of our conversation. I tried to tell you the truth, but I was afraid that it would ruin everything. I don’t like the salty coffee. But I have had the salty coffee for my whole life just because I love you!

Not only fashion and music are making a return—houses built in 1970s have proven to be better at cutting energy waste than those built today. The “tea cosy (茶壺套)” design, created in the mid-1970s and built in the early 1980s for low-income people, could provide a blueprint for meeting the Government aims of producing less CO2 from homes.

The 200 houses were designed to provide low-energy housing, and depend on an inner concrete (水泥) structure that holds in heat, protected by highly insulated (隔熱的) setting which produces a “tea cosy” effect. The ordinary-looking houses also depend on more windows on south-facing sides, with northerly facing doors protected by porches (門廊).

A study found the houses are 50 percent more energy efficient than the average home and use a quarter of the average energy for space heating. According to researchers, they use less than two-thirds of the power of homes built to meet 2010 building demands. And they will still be 25 percent more efficient than houses built to even more strict proposed demands for 2013. The design is one of the few that will be able to meet 2016 demands for zero-carbon homes.

They were in the beginning fixed with just one or two gas heaters per home, although most now have central heating, depending on the heat from the sun and high insulation to keep steady temperatures inside the house. To be comfortable, they only need to use heating for three to four months a year, compared with seven months for UK home on average, and can be lived with no heating at all.

With many house builders at present worrying that new homes are going to be much more expensive to build in order to meet the Government’s ambitious targets, the“tea cosy”model meets this need perfectly.

One of the Queen’s closest relatives and oldest friends was allowed to give a deep description into the family life of the Royals. Although there have been hundreds of other books declaring to offer a quick look behind the Palace doors, this is the first written by someone who is closely related to the Royal Family and has shared their lives—not only throughout the Queen’s reign (統(tǒng)治) but also through that of her father, King George VI.

The Final Curtsey was written by her Majesty’s cousin and childhood playmate the Honorable Margaret Rhodes. It tells in details the story of Mrs. Rhodes’s relationship with the Royal family over eight decades. The book, with delightfully informal and never-before-seen pictures, has been written with the full knowledge of the Queen, who has read and approved parts of it.

Born in 1925, the Honorable Margaret Rhodes has led an extraordinary life. She was the childhood playmate of her cousin, the Queen; a wartime M16 spy; and she was a lady-in- waiting (宮女) to her aunt, the Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, from 1991 until the latter’s death in 2002. At the Queen’s 80th birthday in April 2006, Margaret gave an interview to the BBC which she proved that, in her own opinion and despite several false reports, the Queen would not abdicate(退位).

In this charming autobiography (自傳),she told how she was offered a house to live in the Royal farm in Windsor Great Park unexpectedly. One day when she and the Queen were out riding outside, she suddenly returned and said, “Could you bear to live in the suburb?” “I think it should be OK.” Therefore Mrs. Rhodes is now still living there.

  第二節(jié):概要寫作 (滿分15分)

  閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容寫一篇60詞左右的內(nèi)容概要。

In a small village, the parents of a little boy were very depressed due to his bad temper(脾氣). The boy used to get angry very easily and hurt others with his words. While he forgot what he spoke in anger, his friends and neighbours avoided him.

His mother and father tried many ways to make him give up his anger and develop kindness. Unfortunately, all their attempts failed. Finally, the boy’s father came up with an idea.

One day, his father gave him a huge bag of nails, asking him to hammer one nail to the fence every time he lost his temper. The little boy found it funny and accepted what his father had said.

His anger drove him to hammer 30 nails into the fence on the first day! Over the next few days, the little boy found it very difficult to hammer the nails into the fence and decided to control his temper.

Gradually, the number of nails hammered into the fence was reduced and the day arrived when he hammered none!

Now, his father told him to remove the nails every day as he had controlled his anger. Several days passed and the boy was able to pull out most of the nails from the fence.

The father appreciated him and asked him, pointing to one of the holes, “What do you see there?”

The boy replied, “A hole in the fence?”

He told the boy, “The nails were your bad temper and they were hammered into people. You can remove the nails but still see the holes in the fence. The fence never looks the same! It has scars all over! Your bad temper and anger were like that! Use words for good. Use them to show your heart!”

  (Text 9)

I wasn’t too fond of the lecture classes of 400 students in my general courses. Halfway through my second term, when I was considering whether or not to come back in the fall, I went on the internet and came across AmeriCorps. Then I joined the organization. And that was what I did last school year. I worked on making roads, building a house, serving as a teacher’s assistant, and working as a camp officer in several projects in South Carolina and Florida. It's been a great experience. And I've almost learned more than what I could have in college. Since I didn’t really want to be at that school and I wasn’t interested in my major anyway, I think this was better for me. After 1,700 hours of service, I received 4,750 dollars. I can use that to pay off the money I borrowed from the banks or for what I need when I go back to school this fall at Columbus State in Ohio. Classes are smaller there, and I’ll be majoring in German education. After working with the kids, now I know I want to be a teacher.
