Being blind is hard. But things were even harder for those disabled kids who were born in a small village in India, where most people thought that kids with disabilities were useless. More Americans expect to work past their 65th birthdays and never retire (退休), says a recent study. The Associated Press with NORC Center for Public Affairs Research questioned 1,075 people , who were aged 50 and older. One- fourth of them said they never planned to retire. That was even truer for low-income(收入) earners in that age group.
In America, the age of 65 is the traditional age to retire. 60 percent of the people aged 50 to 64 said they expected to work past their 65th birthdays. More than half of those who were already older than 65 said they planned to keep working, too. They said they were working an average of 31 hours per week.

A majority (多數(shù)) of older workers—especially those who were 65 and older –planned to change employers or move into an entirely new job, as they headed into the later years.
One – third of the people earning le ss than $ 50,000 a year said they would keep working. About 20 percent of those who earned more than $100,000 said they would never retire.
As baby boomers –people born between 1946 and 1964 –reach the age of 65, the United States will have more older people than ever before. The number of Americans who were 65 years old and older jumped 21 percent—or to 35.5 million—between 2002 and 2012 . That number is expected to reach 92 million by 2060.

Our grandparents tell us stories of their years over and over again. Until finally we have heard them tell the stories so many times that we wonder why they keep on repeating these old times. Unconsciously(無意識(shí)的), this is the way our minds work to pass history on. There was a time when writing, reading , books, radio, TV and electronics of today were not present at all. Few things could be used to record and pass information on to the next generation. People would only sit around the campfire or the kitchen table, sharing stories of the past. This is called the “oral(口述的)tradition”.
Children listened endlessly to families sharing stories of their youth. Memories are put in the minds of young people forever so they could later recall and tell them to their children and gran dchildren. Can you recall any of this? I can. How could life of the past be able to survive for centuries without this telling of stories and information to the listening ears of the youth?
Just the other day, our Uncle Martin came to visit with his two kids. As we sat around the kitchen table sharing stories and family remembrances, Uncle Martin’s laughter filled the room .He recalled several times that he was lucky to have not been hit by the fal ling trees. Each person in the room listened and enjoyed his details and humor.
We all can continue to share stories with our children, telling of those good old days. Children do listen and want to hear true, sincere, funny and scary tales dug up from the past and then they tell their friends. So oral tradition goes on and on.
32.According to the text, how did people pass on messages in the past?
A. By using electronics. B. By telling stories orally.
C. By recording them in books. D. By reading books to the next generation.
33. What will happen if the stories are repeated many times?
A. They can make the children feel bored.
B. They can make the children’s minds clear.
C. They can improve the children’s creativity.
D. They can give the children a deep impression.
34. What will the children probably do after they liste n to the stories from the old?
A. Dig up more stories in the past. B. Share them with their friends.
C. Write them down carefully. D. Tell them to their parents.
35. What may be the author’s attitude to oral tradition?
A. He/She values it. B. He/She is against it.
C. He/She thinks it’s outdated. D. He/She thinks it’s unreliable.

Some places in the world have strange laws. It’s important for you to know about them before going there.
Whoever likes to chew gum (口香糖) may have to leave Singapore. The government really wants to keep the city clean and will fine you for chewing gum.
Before you leave for the United Arab Emirates you’d better make sure you aren’t visiting during Ramadan (齋月). During that time you aren’t allowed to eat or drink in public. Tourists have been fined up to $275 for drinking in public.
Lovers spend so much time kissing each other goodbye at train stations that trains often start late. This law---no kissing your lover goodbye at train stations---is rather old, and isn’t in use today in France.
In Thailand it’s against the law to drive a car or motorcycle without a shirt on, no matter how hot it is. Punishments are different in different areas and can include warnings and tickets costing about $10. No joke ---the local police will stop you.
Studies in Denmark have shown that cars with their headlights on are more noticeable by other drivers than those with their headlights off. Drivers there are required to leave their headlights on even during the day, or they may face a fine up to $100.
Do you often buy things using coins? Don’t do it in Canada. The Currency Law of 1985 doesn’t allow using only coins to buy things. Even the use of the dollar-coin is limited (受限制的). The shop owner has the right to choose whether to take your coins or not.
Make sure you know about these laws before your next trip. Better safe than sorry.

A few days ago my wife sent me out to buy something. When I came hom e, I handed her a paper bag and said, “Here are the apples you wanted.” She looked in the bag, and then she looked at me. “I told you,” she said slowly, “to buy some eggs.”

It’s nothing to worry about,” he said. “If you know you are absent-minded, you are all right. But if you do not know you’re absent-minded, you may be really in trouble.”
“Many famous people were absent-minded,” the doctor told me. “Thomas Edison was standing in line one day to pay his taxes. When he arrived at the window, he found that he had forgotten his own name. He had to ask the man who was behind him to tell him who he was.”
I felt much better and got up to leave. “Thank you, doctor,” I said. “How much do I have to pay you?”
“Ten dollars for the check-up ,” the doctor said.
“But doctor, I did not have a check-up!”

I recently traveled with my family to Itacare, Brazil. Itacare is a small town in the state of Bahia, which is known for its beautiful beaches. While there, I met a man named Alvimar Valadares. He walks more than 12 miles a day without wearing shoes, looking for sea turtles on the beaches and picking up plastic.
There are few sea turtles left alive now in Brazil and around the world. Valadares, who prefers to be called “Capixaba,” wants to help save them. A local hotel sponsors (贊助) his work.
Several years ago, the hotel manager noticed a group of people watching in respectful silence as Capixaba saved three baby sea turtles. The hotel manager realized that these turtles were great ambassadors (大使). They draw people's attention and make them want to learn about and protect the local environment.
Capixaba has worked in the hotel's Tartaruga Program for the past 15 years. (Tartaruga means turtle in Portuguese.)
In addition to watching and checking sea turtles, Capixaba meets with local schoolchildren and fishermen to teach them how to protect the turtles and the environment. The more that people know, Capixaba said, the more they can help protect the turtles and the environment. For example, since sea turtle hatchlings (幼崽) follow the reflection (反射) of the water to get to the ocean, it's important for local houses and hotels to keep their lights dim (暗淡的) at night. That way, the hatchlings will know which way to go.
“I really like to work with and teach kids,” Capixaba said. “They're the ones who are going to change this and help the turtles.” Then he let me hold one of the turtle eggs!
29. Why does Valadares walk along the coast?
A. To stop tourists catching sea turtles. B. To record sea turtles' population.

A. They needed to be protected. B. They could bring Bahia business.
C. They attracted visitors to the hotel. D. They helped people learn about Brazil.
31. What’s the purpose of the example in Paragraph 5?.
A. To show what sea turtles do at night.

On December 24, 1971, 17-year-old Juliane Köepcke got on a plane with her mother in Lima, Peru, to fly to another city to meet her father.
Over the Amazon jungle (叢林), the rain fell heavily and there was a strong wind. And then lightning hit the plane at 3,000 metres, and it crashed (墜毀). Juliane fell quickly through the air in her seat and hit the trees hard. For three hours, she was senseless. When she woke up, her right arm was cut, her shoulder hurt badly and she couldn't see out of one eye. She was alone. But she was alive!
Juliane's father was a biologist (生物學(xué)家) and when she was small, he taught her how to survive in the jungle. She found a small river and walked slowly along it. “If I follow the river,” she thought, “I'll find people.” The river also gave her clean water to drink. It was very hot, but the river water kept her cool. Sometimes she had to swim in the river because it was too deep to walk in. There was fruit on some trees but she didn't eat it — she knew it was too dangerous. Juliane walked for ten days. Ten days after the crash, she found a small house by the river. There were some woodcutters in the house. They cleaned her cuts carefully and the next day, they carried her down the river, and a plane took her safely back to the city of Pucallpa.
Juliane was the only person who survived the plane crash. The other 91 people, including her mother, all died.
The film director, Werner Herzog, had a ticket to travel on the plane but missed it. Thirty years later, he made a film called Wings of Hope about Juliane and her incredible story.
