When was the last time you read a book, or a substantial magazine article? Do your dailyreading habits center around tweets or Facebook updates? If you’re one of countless peoplewho don’t make a habit of reading regularly, you might be missing out: reading has a significantnumber of benefits, and just a few benefits of reading are listed below.
還記得上次看書(shū)或是閱讀雜志文章是什么時(shí)候嗎?你每天是不是總關(guān)注著推特或臉書(shū)的更新?如果你還沒(méi)有養(yǎng)成定期閱讀的習(xí)慣,那么就真的忽略了:閱讀會(huì)有很多的好處,下面先一起看看列舉出來(lái)的好處吧。
1. Mental Stimulation
刺激神經(jīng)
Studies have shown that staying mentally stimulated can slow the progress of (or possiblyeven prevent) Alzheimer’s and Dementia, since keeping your brain active and engagedprevents it from losing power. Just like any other muscle in the body, the brain requiresexercise to keep it strong and healthy, so the phrase “use it or lose it” is particularly apt whenit comes to your mind. Doing puzzles and playing games such as chess have also been found tobe helpful with cognitive stimulation.
2. Stress Reduction
減緩壓力
No matter how much stress you have at work, in your personal relationships, or countlessother issues faced in daily life, it all just slips away when you lose yourself in a great story. Awell-written novel can transport you to other realms, while an engaging article will distractyou and keep you in the present moment, letting tensions drain away and allowing you torelax.
無(wú)論工作、人際關(guān)系還是其他雜七雜八的日常瑣事中遇到多大的壓力,一個(gè)好故事絕對(duì)能讓你把這些都拋在腦后。一本優(yōu)質(zhì)小說(shuō)絕對(duì)可以帶你進(jìn)入另一個(gè)世界,而一篇好的文章足以把你牢牢吸引無(wú)暇顧其他,幫你去除緊張讓你得以放松。
3. Knowledge
知識(shí)
Everything you read fills your head with new bits of information, and you never know when itmight come in handy. The more knowledge you have, the better-equipped you are to tackleany challenge you’ll ever face.
你所閱讀的都會(huì)充斥大腦,讓其得到新的信息,你絕對(duì)不知道啥時(shí)候就會(huì)派上用場(chǎng),知識(shí)越多,面對(duì)挑戰(zhàn)時(shí)你的底氣就越足。
Additionally, here’s a bit of food for thought: should you ever find yourself in direcircumstances, remember that although you might lose everything else—your job, yourpossessions, your money, even your health—knowledge can never be taken from you.
另外,這是你的精神食糧,哪怕發(fā)現(xiàn)自己處在這樣可悲的境地,即使你失去了一切——工作,財(cái)產(chǎn),金錢(qián)甚健康——你絕不會(huì)失去知識(shí)。
4.Vocabulary Expansion
擴(kuò)大詞匯量
This goes with the above topic: the more you read, the more words you gain exposure to, andthey’ll inevitably make their way into your everyday vocabulary. Being articulate and well-spoken is of great help in any profession, and knowing that you can speak to higher-ups withself-confidence can be an enormous boost to your self-esteem. It could even aid in yourcareer, as those who are well-read, well-spoken, and knowledgeable on a variety of topicstend to get promotions more quickly (and more often) than those with smaller vocabularies andlack of awareness of literature, scientific breakthroughs, and global events.
Reading books is also vital for learning new languages, as non-native speakers gain exposureto words used in context, which will ameliorate their own speaking and writing fluency.
學(xué)習(xí)新語(yǔ)言,閱讀也是個(gè)不可或缺的。這樣非母語(yǔ)的學(xué)生才能了解語(yǔ)境中單詞的使用,促使自己在口語(yǔ)和寫(xiě)作中更加自然流暢。
5. Memory Improvement
When you read a book, you have to remember an assortment of characters, their backgrounds, ambitions, history, and nuances, as well as the various arcs and sub-plots that weave theirway through every story. That’s a fair bit to remember, but brains are marvellous things andcan remember these things with relative ease. Amazingly enough, every new memory you createforges new synapses (brain pathways)and strengthens existing ones, which assists in short-term memory recall as well as stabilizing moods. How cool is that?
6. Stronger Analytical Thinking Skills
提高分析思考技巧
Have you ever read an amazing mystery novel, and solved the mystery yourself before finishing the book? If so, you were able to put critical and analytical thinking to work by taking note of all the details provided and sorting them out to determine “whodunnit”.
有沒(méi)有讀過(guò)一個(gè)超贊的懸疑小說(shuō),在讀完之前就自己解出了謎底?如果是,那么你真的可以記下提供的所有細(xì)節(jié),然后利用自己嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)?shù)姆治鏊季S設(shè)定一個(gè)謎底來(lái)寫(xiě)一本自己的“偵探小說(shuō)” 了哦。
That same ability to analyze details also comes in handy when it comes to critiquing the plot; determining whether it was a well-written piece, if the characters were properly developed, if the storyline ran smoothly, etc. Should you ever have an opportunity to discuss the book with others, you’ll be able to state your opinions clearly, as you’ve taken the time to really consider all the aspects involved.
需要批判某一場(chǎng)景,這種分析細(xì)節(jié)的能力也可以手到擒來(lái),看看這個(gè)寫(xiě)得好不好,人物設(shè)立得怎么樣,故事脈絡(luò)是否連貫等等。當(dāng)花了時(shí)間來(lái)考慮這些方方面面,如果有機(jī)會(huì)和其他人討論這本書(shū),你就可以清楚的闡述自己的觀點(diǎn)了。
7. Improved Focus and Concentration
提高注意力和集中力
In our internet-crazed world, attention is drawn in a million different directions at once as we multi-task through every day. In a single 5-minute span, the average person will divide their time between working on a task, checking email, chatting with a couple of people (via gchat, skype, etc.), keeping an eye on twitter, monitoring their smartphone, and interacting with co-workers. This type of ADD-like behaviour causes stress levels to rise, and lowers our productivity.
在這個(gè)網(wǎng)絡(luò)時(shí)代,每天紛雜的任務(wù)讓我們的注意力會(huì)被無(wú)數(shù)的事物所吸引。在短短的5分鐘時(shí)段里,一個(gè)人要把它劃分為完成任務(wù)、查看郵件、和一群人聊天(gchat, skype等等)、刷推特、設(shè)置手機(jī)、和同事交流等。這種疊加的行為模式提高了壓力水平,減少了我們的效率。
When you read a book, all of your attention is focused on the story—the rest of the world just falls away, and you can immerse yourself in every fine detail you’re absorbing. Try reading for 15-20 minutes before work (i.e. on your morning commute, if you take public transit), and you’ll be surprised at how much more focused you are once you get to the office.
看書(shū)的時(shí)候,所有的注意力都集中在故事上——周?chē)囊磺兴坪醵疾淮嬖诹?,你可以盡情的沉浸在任一細(xì)節(jié)里。試著在工作前閱讀15-20分鐘(如果你乘公共交通,那就在早班車(chē)上),然后你就會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)進(jìn)辦公室那一剎那會(huì)注意力更加集中。
8. Better Writing Skills
提升寫(xiě)作水平
This goes hand-in-hand with the expansion of your vocabulary: exposure to published, well-written work has a noted effect on one’s own writing, as observing the cadence, fluidity, and writing styles of other authors will invariably influence your own work. In the same way that musicians influence one another, and painters use techniques established by previous masters, so do writers learn how to craft prose by reading the works of others.
9. Tranquility
平和
In addition to the relaxation that accompanies reading a good book, it’s possible that the subject you read about can bring about immense inner peace and tranquility. Reading spiritual texts can lower blood pressure and bring about an immense sense of calm, while reading self-help books has been shown to help people suffering from certain mood disorders and mild mental illnesses.
讀一本好書(shū),不僅能放松自己,你所讀的主題也許還能帶來(lái)內(nèi)心的平靜和平和。讀那些精神類(lèi)文章能降低血壓,帶來(lái)巨大的平靜,而讀那些激勵(lì)型的書(shū)籍能有效防止讀者產(chǎn)生情緒失調(diào)以及精神疾病。
10. Free Entertainment
免費(fèi)娛樂(lè)
Though many of us like to buy books so we can annotate them and dog-ear pages for future reference, they can be quite pricey. For low-budget entertainment, you can visit your local library and bask in the glory of the countless tomes available there for free. Libraries have books on every subject imaginable, and since they rotate their stock and constantly get new books, you’ll never run out of reading materials.
If you happen to live in an area that doesn’t have a local library, or if you’re mobility-impaired and can’t get to one easily, most libraries have their books available in PDF or ePub format so you can read them on your e-reader, iPad, or your computer screen. There are also many sources online where you can download free e-books, so go hunting for something new to read!
如果你住的地方?jīng)]有圖書(shū)館,或者交通不便過(guò)去不方便,很多圖書(shū)館都提供PDF、ePUB格式的書(shū)籍,這樣你就可以在電子設(shè)備,ipad或是電腦上進(jìn)行閱讀了。你還可以在網(wǎng)上下載一些免費(fèi)的電子書(shū),趕緊去找找新的書(shū)來(lái)看吧!
There’s a reading genre for every literate person on the planet, and whether your tastes lie in classical literature, poetry, fashion magazines, biographies, religious texts, young adult books, self-help guides, or romance novels, there’s something out there to capture your curiosity and imagination. Step away from your computer for a little while, crack open a book, and replenish your soul for a little while.
地球上的每個(gè)文化人都有自己的閱讀體裁偏好,無(wú)論你喜歡經(jīng)典文學(xué)、詩(shī)歌、流行雜志、傳紀(jì),宗教讀物、青少年讀物、激勵(lì)類(lèi)書(shū)籍、或是愛(ài)情小說(shuō),這些都能夠抓住你的好奇心和想象力。遠(yuǎn)離一會(huì)兒電腦吧,打開(kāi)書(shū),凈化一下自己的靈魂吧。

But when you get home after a long day, you give in to temptation. You turn on the TV and lieon the couch. You login to Facebook and start watching YouTube videos. Before you know it,it’s bedtime. No time left in the day to read.
但是當(dāng)你過(guò)完漫長(zhǎng)的一天回到家中時(shí),就向各種誘惑妥協(xié)了。你打開(kāi)電視躺在沙發(fā)上。你登錄到Facebook上,開(kāi)始看YouTube上的視頻。不知不覺(jué),就到了上床睡覺(jué)的時(shí)間了。沒(méi)有時(shí)間看書(shū)了。
If this describes you, you’re not alone. This poll reveals that half the adults in America read fivebooks or fewer over the past year. But it doesn’t have to be this way. I’ve discovered 10 easyways to read more books, and I’d like to share them with you.
如果上面描述的恰巧是你的生活,那表明你和很多人都一樣。調(diào)查發(fā)現(xiàn),美國(guó)有一半的成年人去年一年只看了不到5本或剛好5本書(shū)。但是不一定非要這樣。我發(fā)現(xiàn)了10種簡(jiǎn)單的方法,能讓你看更多的書(shū),我想和你分享一下。
These 10 tips have helped me to read more than 170 books over the past four years, so Ipromise that they work.
使用下面的這10種方法,我在過(guò)去的四年里讀了170多本書(shū),所以我可以負(fù)責(zé)任地告訴你,這些方法很管用。
1. Always have a book with you.
1. 隨身攜帶圖書(shū)。
When you carry a book around with you all the time, it’s less likely that you’ll play with yourphone or daydream whenever you’re caught waiting for something.
如果你一直隨身攜帶圖書(shū),當(dāng)你在等待的時(shí)候, 就不會(huì)老是玩手機(jī)或是做白日夢(mèng)了。
If you use your waiting time to read, you’ll be able to finish many more books in the long run.
如果你把等待的時(shí)間用來(lái)閱讀,從長(zhǎng)遠(yuǎn)來(lái)看,你會(huì)看完很多書(shū)。
2. Set aside time to read every night before you go to bed.
2. 每晚上床睡覺(jué)之前,抽出一段時(shí)間來(lái)閱讀。
10 or 15 minutes of reading before you go to bed is a good way to unwind.
睡覺(jué)前看10到15分鐘的書(shū),是放松的好方法。
3. Get enough sleep.
3. 保證充足的睡眠。
This might sound like a tip that belongs in a different article, so allow me to explain.
這個(gè)方法看起來(lái)好像不應(yīng)該放在這里,我來(lái)解釋一下吧。
Many people want to read on the bus or subway ride to work, but because they’re sleep-deprived, they decide to take a nap instead.
很多人都想在上班的路上在公交車(chē)或地鐵上看書(shū),但是因?yàn)楹芾В詴r(shí)間都用來(lái)打盹了。
If you’re well-rested, you can use your commute to do some valuable reading.
如果你休息得很好,你就可以利用坐車(chē)的時(shí)間去看一些有價(jià)值的書(shū)。
4. Use your finger or a pen as a guide when you’re reading.
4. 當(dāng)你看書(shū)的時(shí)候,用手指或筆來(lái)指引內(nèi)容。
When you do this, you force your eyes not to “jump” around or skip back over the words thatyou’ve already read, which is the natural tendency of your eyes.
我們看書(shū)的時(shí)候,眼睛會(huì)自然地跳過(guò)或回看已經(jīng)看過(guò)的內(nèi)容,如果你用手指或筆來(lái)指引內(nèi)容,就不會(huì)出現(xiàn)這個(gè)問(wèn)題。
This tip alone will greatly improve your reading efficiency.
這個(gè)方法會(huì)極大地提高你的閱讀效率。
5. Use an e-reader.
5. 使用電子書(shū)。
I was initially hesitant about buying an e-reader (I use a Kindle), because I enjoy readingbooks in their physical form. But I was quickly won over by the convenience of doing all of myreading on the Kindle.
剛開(kāi)始我很猶豫要不要買(mǎi)一個(gè)電紙書(shū)。(我用的是Kindle),因?yàn)槲液芟硎芗垥?shū)閱讀的那種感覺(jué)。但是在kindle上閱讀實(shí)在是太方便了,它很快就把我征服了。
The font sizes are adjustable; you can share one book with multiple devices; you can highlighttext and make notes; you can use one hand to navigate all of the Kindle’s functions (this isespecially useful for me when I find myself holding on to the handlebar of a crowded bus withone hand, and using my Kindle with the other).
kindle上的字體大小是可以調(diào)整的;你可以使用多臺(tái)設(shè)備來(lái)看一本書(shū);你可以在書(shū)上畫(huà)重點(diǎn)并做筆記;你可以用一只手瀏覽Kindle的所有功能(這對(duì)我來(lái)說(shuō)尤其有用。這樣我在擁擠的公交車(chē)上就可以一只手抓著把手,一只手拿著kindle)。
6. Buy audio books.
6. 購(gòu)買(mǎi)有聲圖書(shū)。
If you prefer to do your “reading” by listening, this option will work well for you.
如果你喜歡聽(tīng)書(shū),這種方式會(huì)很適合你。
7. Read one book at a time.
7. 一次只看一本書(shū)。
It’s tempting to read multiple books at once, but when you focus on finishing one book at atime, you’ll get more out of each book that you read.
同時(shí)看很多本書(shū)看起來(lái)很誘人,但是當(dāng)你每次只專(zhuān)注于一本書(shū)時(shí),你從這本書(shū)中得到的收獲會(huì)比你同時(shí)看其他書(shū)時(shí)從這本書(shū)中得到的收獲要大。
8. Read while sitting on the “throne.”
8. 坐在“寶座”上看書(shū)。
It’s not recommended that you spend too much time sitting on the toilet, but since you’regoing to be there for five minutes or so, why not do some reading? Five minutes of extrareading a day does add up.
不推薦你花太多的時(shí)間坐在馬桶上,但是反正你每天都要在那里坐上五分鐘,為什么不順便看點(diǎn)兒書(shū)呢?每天五分鐘看起來(lái)很短,但是堅(jiān)持下來(lái),加起來(lái)時(shí)間就不少了。
9. Keep a list of books that you’ve read.
9. 把你讀過(guò)的書(shū)列在一張清單里。
It’s exciting to see the list growing as time goes by, which will further encourage you to readmore.
隨著時(shí)間的推移,這張清單會(huì)越來(lái)越長(zhǎng),看到它你會(huì)感到很興奮,并且想看更多的書(shū)。
10. Keep a list of books that you want to read.
10. 把你想看的書(shū)列在一張清單里。
This list represents all the knowledge that you’d like to gain in the future. Referring to this listand updating it regularly will help you stay motivated to keep reading!
這張清單代表著以后你想獲得的知識(shí)。 看看這張清單并經(jīng)常更新它,會(huì)幫助你保持繼續(xù)看書(shū)的動(dòng)力。
In closing…
最后……
Reading a book is like undergoing a chemical reaction. You’ll never be exactly the same whenyou finish a book, because every book has the power to teach you, encourage you and shapeyou.
看一本書(shū)就像經(jīng)歷一次化學(xué)反應(yīng)。當(dāng)你看完一本書(shū)的時(shí)候,你會(huì)和以前有所不同,因?yàn)槊勘緯?shū)都能夠指導(dǎo)你、鼓勵(lì)你并塑造你。
關(guān)于讀書(shū)的英語(yǔ)文章篇三
I love sitting down and reading a good book. Books are big part of my life, and reading is a great way to relax. Interestingly,I have found I often reread books and that, when I do, I enjoy the book much more than I did the first time I read it.
It is possible for the reader to develop a further understanding of a book on the second reading. In particular, the second reading of any good book lets the reader learn something new. For example,I first read The Lord of the Rings trilogy when I was in the first grade of middle school. It was just a nice fantasy novel series at that time. However, when U reread it two years later, I realized the author had created a complete new world with numerous interwoven stories which were really intriguing. The second reading of a book definitely allows the reader to enjoy it on a new level.
Character development is important in all books but is something people often miss on the first reading. The second reading can open one's eyes to a book's characters' true natures. For instance, Herman Melville's Moby Dick is an adventure novel about a whale hunt. Or at least that is what I thought when I read it the first time. Upon my second reading, I realized it is clearly about Captain had harmed him years ago. Insights gleaned from the second reading can help change the way a person views a book and its characters.
Finally, people often miss the important themes of a book the first time they read it but pick on them after rereading it. Larger themes usually come into sharper focus with a second reading. At first glance, William Golding's The Lord of the Files seems to be an adventure novel about a group of British schoolboys stranded on an island during a war. But the second reading shows you that it is a novel about good against evil and the depths to which humans can sink. Themes that remain hidden at first often reveal themselves with a second reading.
I truly believe that reading a book a second time is more interesting than the first because people can understand the book better, learn more about the characters, and pick up on the books' themes. Without a second reading, a deeper understanding of most books is virtually impossible.
